It all comes down to Friday night in Spur.
The Spur Spurettes will host the Guthrie Lady Jaguars, and assuming that both teams take care of business Tuesday night, the district championship will be Friday night, Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Domes.
That assumes, however, that the 9–0 Spurettes prevail over the 1–6 Paducah Lady Dragons Tuesday night, and that 7–1 Guthrie can defeat the 4–4 Lady Jays Jays that same Tuesday.
In all likelihood Spur, Guthrie and Jayton will all make the playoffs. No other team in the district has won more than one district game.
But, a couple of scenarios could determine how the trio makes the playoffs. If Spur and Guthrie both win Tuesday night, and Guthrie were to defeat Spur Friday night, they would be district co-champions.
The Texas Spur caught up with Spurettes head coach David Castellon to get his take on the district race, and he said, “If we beat Paducah and Guthrie this next week, we will be 10–0 district champions and will receive a first round bye. If we beat Paducah and lose to Guthrie (if Guthrie beats Jayton on Tuesday), we would be 9–1 and Co-district champions with Guthrie. Coach Shipman and I haven’t talked about what would happen from there yet. I’ll keep you updated though as we get closer.”
Often in such situations, a coin toss determines who goes first in the playoffs, but one way to ensure that the Spurettes don’t have to face a coin toss is if they win Friday night.
