Spur put on an offensive
show for a packed homecoming crowd in Jones Stadium Friday night as they shut out the O’Donnell Eagles 53-0.
Going into the game Six-man.com ranked the ‘Dogs at number 10 in their six-man division in the state.
Spur scored on its first possession. After winning the coin toss and getting the opening kick, the Bulldogs hand off to Ethan Parsons who ran the ball in for a TD at 9:38 left in the first quarter, with a gain of the extra point giving a score of 8-0.
In its first offensive attempts of the night, O’Donnell never gained traction.
When the Bulldogs regained possession on downs, they scored on a Parsons pass to Francisco Hernandez with 7:39 left in the first quarter, with a good extra point making the score 16-0.
Spur kicked the ball to the Eagles for a touchback. O’Donnell then attempted to generate a drive, but an interception by Zage Barron stopped the Eagles.
Setting up at the 29-yard line, Spur’s Gunnir Bateman advanced the ball to Corey Hamilton for a Bulldog TD at 6:11 in the first quarter, with no extra point gained on the play, for a score of 22-0.
Hernandez’s kickoff resulted in a touchback, and the Eagles took over on the 20-yard line. O’Donnell attempted to move the ball, but were shut down on a dive play when Martinez recovered a fumble.
Both teams traded possessions on a series of downs, neither scoring, but with 4:00 left in the first quarter Parsons ran the ball in for a TD. With no gain of extra point the score moved to 28-0.
On the Eagles’ next possession, they were slowed by a penalty, but were ultimately stopped when Parsons intercepted a pass and was taken down at the 37-yard line. However, neither team was able to score again in the first quarter.
At the beginning of second quarter, O’Donnell had possession at the 26-yard line, but the Bulldogs stood tough, shut down the Eagles, and gained control of the ball at the 5-yard line. The Bulldogs advanced down the field on run and pass plays, overcoming a penalty in the process. On 2nd and 7 Hernandez pitched the ball to Parsons, who scrambled to complete a pass to Nicholas Cole, who took it in for a Bulldog TD with 6:07 left in the second quarter. The Bulldogs gained an extra point on the play, bringing the score to 36-0.
O’Donnell moved the ball down the field, but not enough to score and the ball went back over to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs advanced the ball to the 1/2-yard line when the offense received a penalty and the ball was moved back. On 3rd and goal Hernandez passed the ball to Martinez for a completed pass for a Bulldog TD with 2:12 left in the 2nd quarter, with a good extra point making the score 44-0.
Bulldogs kicked off to the Eagles, but O’Donnell fumbled, and the ball was recovered by Spur, but due to a flag on the play, the Bulldogs were forced to re-kick.
Spur held. The Bulldogs advanced the ball down the field, and with 0:21 left in the half Parsons ran the ball into the endzone for a Bulldog TD, with a gain of the extra point advancing the score to 52-0.
Due to the mercy rule in six-man football, the game was called at half-time with a Bulldog win of 52-0 for 2019 Spur Homecoming.
