According to the United States Elections Project, a database about the United States electoral system, 49.3 percent of the voting-eligible population turned out to vote in 2018, with more than 116 million ballots. That’s the highest voter turnout percentage for a mid-term election since 1914, when 50.4 percent of eligible voters went to the polls. It surpasses 1966, the previous high, when turnout was 48.7 percent.
Based on initial early voting data from local clerks, Dickens and Kent counties are poised to match 2018’s robust early voting numbers in 2022.
According to Dickens County Clerk Danay Carnes, there were 407 absentee and early votes total in the county in 2018, and as of Monday afternoon, with early voting only being a little more than halfway done, the numbers are 242 for absentee and early vote ballots for 2022.
In Kent County, District Clerk Craig Harrison is seeing a similar pattern. In 2018 Kent had 218 absentee and early votes, and as of Monday afternoon, their early votes were 104 for 2022.
Early voting ends Friday, Nov. 4, and election day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
