Election Day is Saturday, May 6. In Dickens County, the City of Spur, Spur ISD and the City of Dickens will not be holding elections. All three entities have unopposed candidates on the ballots, and have voted to cancel elections.
However in Kent County, the City of Jayton and JGISD have contested races.
The newspaper sent questionnaires to new candidates in all races, and called or emailed all to follow up. Most returned their information in time for this week’s deadline.
For Spur ISD, Cody Schmidt, a lineman for South Plains Electric Cooperative, has filed to run for the Spur Independent School District, At-Large, Place 6 seat for the May 6 election. (At-large, Place 6 incumbent and school board president Barry Ferguson chose not to seek re-election.)
The other board seat that Spur ISD has on the ballot is Place 5, currently held by Matt Humphreys, the incumbent, who has filed for re-election.
Both are considered elected.
For the City of Dickens,
the Mayor position, currently held by David Warren and two at-large council seats, are on the ballot. The at-large positions are currently held by incumbents Marie Mullins and Stephen Hart.
Warren, the incumbent mayor, has filed for reelection and is running unopposed.
The two at-large city council seats currently have attracted two candidates, David Wallace and Nancy Hale.
Both are considered elected.
For the City of Spur, the office of mayor, in which Louise Jones is the incumbent, is on the ballot, as are three council seats, Ward 1, currently held by Fronye Morris, who has announced that she will not be seeking re-election, Ward 2, currently held by Don Wright and Ward 3, currently held by Rhea Melton. Elaine Harris of Spur has been considered elected to the open Ward 1 seat.
For the Mayor position, currently held by George Chisum and two at-large council seats are on the ballot: the at-large positions are currently held by Missy Redford and Kerry McGee.
Chisum, the incumbent mayor, has filed for reelection and is running unopposed.
Three candidates are running for the two atlarge city council seats, including incumbents Redford and McGee, and one challenger, Mickey Alexander.
Jayton-Girard ISD
has two board seats on the ballot, at-large seats currently held by B.J. Baldridge and Jeff Arnold. Arnold has
filed for re-election.
Three candidates have filed for the two at-large seats, including one incumbent, Arnold, and two challengers, Matt Herzog and Tiffany Ham.
Patton Springs ISD holds their elections in November.
Nancy Hale has lived in the City of Dickens over 20 years. She graduated from Patton Springs High School in Afton. While employed as the city secretary for the City of Spur she took continuing education courses and completed two Municipal Clerk certifications through the University of North Texas.
She retired from the City of Spur in 2016 and currently owns and operates her late husband’s business, T.C.’s Ponderosa, in Dickens with her daughter, Valerie Smithey.
She has one daughter, Valerie Smithey; one son, Dillon Hale and his wife, Kenzie; and one grandson, Luke Smithey.

JAYTON CITY COUNCIL
MickeyAlexander says her hometown is Jayton, Texas. She graduated from Angelo State University, and Texas State Technical College, Sweetwater. Her occupation is retired dental assistant.
Missy Redford grew up in Roswell, N.M. Her education included Roswell High School and a business marketing degree from New Mexico State University.
Her occupation is a brand marketer for West and Co. jewelry company, and she’s also a photographer.
She has been married to Ron Redford for 22 years; they have a son, Rance, and a daughter, Reese. They have been Kent County residents for 11 years.

SPUR CITY COUNCIL
Elaine Harris
Elaine Harris’s hometown is Commerce, Texas. Her education includes a J.D. degree from Texas Tech University 1986. Her occupation is a solo civil practice of law with tax return preparation services. She has a son, Gregory, and daughter-in-law, Samantha Hardin, living in Spur with granddaughter Alice, 5; a son, Henry, and daughter- in-law Kate Harris, living in Spur with grandson Everett, 18 months; and a daughter, Rebecca Hardin, living in Mexico City.
JAYTON-GIRARD ISD
Jeff Arnold is a 1999 graduate of Jayton-Girard ISD and a 2003 graduate of LCU, where he received a B.S. in secondary education. Since then, he has been employed with Texas Farm Bureau for 20 years. He is married to Jami, and they have two daughters, Camryn, 12, and Zoey, 9.
Tiffany Ham was born and raised in Plano, Texas. She graduated in 1994 from Plano East Senior High and graduated in 2001 from University of North Texas. Her occupations include commercial insurance sales 2005–present and Kent County General Store owner since 2011.
Her family includes husband Daryl and son Bode, a 9th grader at JGISD and daughter Brantley, a 7th grader at JGISD.
Matt Herzog’s hometown is Brookings, Oregon. His education includes graduating from Brookings Harbor High School. His occupation is lineman at South Plains Electric Coop. His family includes his wife, Nichole, and sons, Jarret, Caleb and Harlan.
SPUR ISD
Cody Schmidt’s hometown is Spur. His education includes graduating in 2008 from Spur ISD. His occupation is Lineman, South Plains Electric Cooperative. His family includes his wife, Emily Schmidt, who is accounting manager for Cap Rock Telephone, and daughters Haylen and Kaius.
