EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS DURING STORMS AND TORNADOES

Throughout Dickens County there are registered storm shelters for public use, according to EMS coordinator Matt Hindman.

The Dickens County courthouse annex is a designated storm shelter serving the Dickens and the surrounding area. In Spur, shelters are located at the Spur Community Center (basement) and at the Spur Schools’Dog Domes. Persons attending the courthouse annex shelter are urged to use the main public entrance on the west side. Dickens County elected officials and designated volunteers are charged with opening the annex slightly before or when the siren is sounded. The Dickens siren is to be activated when the National Weather Services encourages communities to seek shelter due to hazardous weather conditions. Outdoor warning sirens are designed to be heard and alert people outdoors to go indoors and receive weather updates from local media. Outdoor sirens can be heard for approximately 1 mile. However, rain, wind and hail and other factors may affect your ability to hear the sirens.

Residents with smart phones can download local weather apps and make sure to have to emergency alerts and public safety alerts turned on. A weather radio is another good option forpurchase.Thecounty is working with SPAG on a notification system called I-info that residents can sign up for. It will send a text message or call, which ever option was chosen, to notify in the event of an emergencyorwhenimportant information needs to be pushed out.

“More information will be coming soon on this,” said Hindman.
