Spur Elementary third graders presented a program for the elementary students on Monday, May 10, in the school cafeteria. The program included a slide show about some famous Latinx Americans and a presentation of “bottle people” that the students had made. As each slide was shown, the students recited poem they had written about their famous people. They included their principal, Mr. Molina, as a famous Latinx American!
In a collaboration between Mrs. Bateman, the third grade writing teacher, and Mrs. Hightower, the social studies teacher, the classes wrote research papers and created “bottle people” of their famous Latinx American. Then the students wrote short descriptive poems about their people and generated a slide of their Latinx Americans.
The materials/supplies for the “bottle people” were purchased with funds from a mini-grant from the Community Foundation of West Texas. The proposal for the mini-grant, entitled “But What About Us,” was written by Mrs. Hightower and involved a project designed to bring attention to Latinx heritage in the United States.
