Farmers’ market starting up in Spur Saturday

The weather forecast is for a gorgeous, sunny Saturday this weekend. The first-ever Spur Craft and Farmers’ Market should provide an inviting destination for vendors and shoppers alike in Rickels Park in downtown Spur from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A trio of downtown partners have come together to spearhead a new bi-weekly farmers’ market in downtown Spur every other Saturday at Rickels Park, starting March 7, 2020.

The City of Spur has provided access and support for the downtown park for the event. The new management team of the Palace Theater will furnish a discount matinee movie, concessions and restrooms. Spur Hardware will supply publicity and advertising.

“It’s going to work just like Homecoming does,” said Briana Sturgis with the Palace Theater. “There are no vendor fees.” She said vendors will need to pack in their tables, canopies and products, and pack out their trash when they’re done. Vendor locations will be first come, first served, and parking will be regular on-street parking.

Rickels Park does have a limited amount of electricity, behind the stage, which would also be available on a first come, first-served basis.

Even though it’s too early for seasonal vegetables and fruits in Spur, Sturgis noted that there will still be local edibles available, including fresh eggs, preserves, honey, barbecue, burritos, baked goods and more.

Local crafts, clothing and jewelry will also be available.

Jeromy Rutledge of Spur Hardware said their store might set up some items in the park as well.

The market runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Setup begins at 7 a.m.

The Palace’s movie that afternoon will be the classic John Wayne film “McClintock.” Cost for the 1 p.m. matinee is $3. The restrooms and concessions will be available during the entire farmers’ market.
