Last week I mentioned our library’s Hometown Corner, which is where we keep books written by or about people with ties to Dickens County.
Kay Ellington and Barbara Brannon, publisher and editor of the Texas Spur, have their spot in the Hometown Corner with their Paragraph Ranch series. We finally got both “The Paragraph Ranch” and “A Wedding at the Paragraph Ranch” in audio format on our Overdrive. Also available in audio format on Overdrive is “Give a Cup of Water: A Paragraph Ranch Tale” by our illustrious newswomen.
You’ve come a long way, baby! Although I was only 10 years old when the 1967 slogan for a cigarette made especially for women came out; it has stuck in my head all these years later. Women are still making their way in many male-dominated areas. Mayor Louise Jones may not be the first female mayor in Spur, but she is definitely in the minority. We have had a female chief of police. That would not have been allowed just a few short years ago. Kamala Harris recently made history when she was elected the first female vice president of the United States.
We recently added a series of chapter books aimed at children ages 6 to 9, or grades 1 to 4. It is called Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls, “five stories of women who rocked the world.” In “Ada Lovelace Breaks the Code,” explore the life of coding pioneer Ada Lovelace, and the stigma she faced as a woman in STEM. This story comes with color illustrations and coding activities.
“Alicia Alonzo Takes the Stage” is the story of a prima ballerina who impressed people all over the world with her beautiful dancing while living with visual impairments.
Girls will be inspired by the Nobel Peace Prize–winning activist and environmentalist Dr. Wangari Maathai in “Dr. Wangari Maathai Plants a Forest.” Complete with beautiful illustrations and educational activities demonstrating the importance of caring for the natural environment, this book challenges young readers to start their own movement—big or small.
Follow mountaineer Junko Tabei on her journey to be the first woman to summit Mount Everest. “Junko Tabei Masters the Mountains” will take young readers through Junko’s fearless life page by page, filled with colorful illustrations and activities perfect for both bedtime stories and educational learning.
In “Madam C.J. Walker Builds a Business,” follow the journey of a young woman who was the first child in her family to be born free to a woman with a thriving hair care business, posed to be America’s first fe male self-made millionaire. It also has full color illustrations and activities.
We received a donation of several Karen Kingsbury Christian Fiction series this past week. Two of them helped us complete a set we had started, in Kingsbury’s Above the Line series. The back cover of the boxed set tells readers, “The four complete novels in the bestselling Above the Line Series follow dedicated Hollywood producers, as they seek to transform the culture through the power of film. The series also features characters from the Baxter family.”
“Take One”: “With millions of investors’ dollars on the line, Chase Ryan and Keith Ellison realize they may be in over their heads in the struggle to fulfill their dreams to change lives through the power of film.”
“Take Two”: “Independent filmmakers, Chase and Keith discover that all that glitters is not gold, and that success in Tinsel Town could cost them everything—their relationships as well as their ideals.”
“Take Three”: “Keith Ellison’s dream of making films that change lives is coming true. But at what price? His daughter, Andi, is growing up fast and her choices could tear the Ellison family apart.”
“Take Four”: “Keith Ellison and his new partner in filmmaking, Dayne Matthews, ink a deal with the nation’s top young actor to star in their biggest production yet. But the actor's reputation for partying threatens the mission of the company. The producers become missionaries in order save the film, their families, and the young movie star.”
Check it all out at the library!
