Even as the 2023 general election comes to a close, it’s time to think about the 2024 primary election on March 5, 2024. Texas Spur Country offices up for election for the next four-year term follow the statewide ballot structure (unless an officeholder was appointed mid-term and has to run in 2024 to complete the term associated with that office).
On the ballot in every county in the state are the offices of Sheriff, Tax Assessor-Collector, County Attorney, and Commissioners of Precincts 1 and 3.
In Dickens County, incumbent Tax Assessor-Collector Rebecca Haney has announced that she will not be seeking re-election, and Commissioner Charlie Morris, precinct 3 incumbent, has announced that he will not be seeking re-election.
Two hopefuls for Dickens County Sheriff —Jay Allen and Jerry Schmidt— have already advertised their intention to run for the office, and a third candidate has approached The Texas Spur seeking information about advertising their candidacy.
In the 110th Judicia District counties of Briscoe, Dickens, Floyd and Motley counties, District Attorney Emily Teegardin, who was appointed to complete the term of predecessor Wade Jackson, will be on the 2024 primary ballot.
In Dickens County, Justice of the Peace Stella Carter, who was appointed one year into the term of predecessor Patti Hagar, will be on the 2024 primary ballot.
November 11, 2023, is the first day that candidates for county office may file for a place on the partisan primary ballot. All candidates should file a treasury report with the county clerk at the courthouse in their respective counties.
In Dickens County, Republican candidates will pick up an application from county chair Jody Duggan.
According to Duggan, who sent the following information to The Texas Spur earlier this week, “The Republican County Chair will be available in the hallway of the Dickens County Courthouse to accept March primary candidate applications on the following dates: November 13, 10 a.m.
until 12 p.m.
November28,2to5p.m. November 30, 9 a.m.
until 12 p.m.
December 11, 2 until 6 p.m.”
As there is currently no Democratic chair for Dickens County, Democratic candidates canreach out to the State Democratic Party or the Texas Secretary of State for filing materials.
December 11, 2023, at 6 p.m., is the deadline for all candidates to file for a place on the primary ballot.
