There’s a whole week of boys’ basketball left—maybe longer—before the playoffs begin for 5-1A.
The 8–0 Paducah Dragons and the 7–1 Jayton Jaybirds battled it out Tuesday night to see who won district and who’s runner-up, but the picture is still pretty murky for number three, the final playoff team.
Since Spur is 4–4 and Guthrie is 3–5, one might think that the Bulldogs have an edge.
But there’s more than meets the eye with the standings.
Both teams have two games left.
Guthrie plays both of their games at home, and their opponents are Motley County 1-6 and Patton Springs 1–6.
Spur plays both of their games away, and their opponents are Patton Springs 1–6 and Jayton 7–1.
Anything can happen on any given night, but assuming the Bulldogs get by Patton Springs, what happens if Jayton beats Spur? According to Michael Norman, principal and athletic director for Spur ISD, “We’ll probably have a playoff between Spur and Guthrie. You wouldn’t risk getting to go to the playoffs over a coin flip.”
Norman said if the game were needed, “it would occur as soon as it could happen. Probably next Monday or Tuesday.”
So hold on to your seats; there are a lot more basketball twists and turns before the playoffs.
