Sunday morning, April 3, before dawn a home in the 400 block of Willard Avenue in Spur was destroyed by fire. Emergency crews responded at 4:30 on Sunday morning, according to Spur fire chief Wess Abbott, who said that when firefighters were paged the house was already well involved in fire with occupants still inside.
Upon arrival emergency crews found the front part of the residence with heavy fire conditions along with two vehicles, a travel trailer, and the exterior of the neighboring structure involved with fire.
Two occupants, an adult male and an adult female, had to escape through a small window in the rear because the front exit was blocked by heavy fire conditions.
The back door was padlocked from the inside and the key could not be quickly obtained. The home did not have a working smoke detector, according to the fire department’s report.
A local good Samaritan helped pull the occupants out the back window after they were awakened due to a loud popping noise. One dog did not escape.
The male occupant suffered minor burns and was treated by Red Cross responders, who were called in to assist, and was not transported for further treatment, said Abbott.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined. Responding agencies were Spur Volunteer Fire Department, Dickens VFD, McAdoo VFD, Dickens County Emergency Management Service, Spur Police Department, Dickens County Sheriff’s Office, and the state fire marshals.
“We cannot stress enough how important it is to have working smoke detectors, have more than one way of egress, and have a meeting place,” Abbott said.
