The Jayton Jaybirds fell to the Motley County Matadors last week in the Region 2 final, 60–8.
Having lost the district championship previously to the Matadors, Jayton knew that their hands were full against a team most media outlets have chosen to win the Division 2 state championship. The Matadors fielded a team of seniors who have paid their dues over the years to get to this point. When the scoreboard buzzed the end of halftime, so did the season for the Jaybirds.
The 2021 season has been special to the community of Jayton for a variety of reasons. The Jaybirds have made the playoffs the past six football seasons. In four of those, Jayton has advanced to the third round or better. The culture of winning football in Jaybird land is being passed down to other grade levels. This year’s group of players proved that a winning culture provides new players the opportunity to step up.
Senior quarterback Joel Williams provided this squad a clear leader. Williams, who had an incredible off-season in the weight room, provided the Jaybirds someone to look towards at difficult points of the season. With precision passing and a solid personal example, Williams leaves a legacy that benefitted his teammates on and off the field.
Julian Segura brought sta bility to the Jayton defensive line all season long. Many plays ended with Segura in a pile of tacklers, proving that he was unafraid to get his hands dirty to keep opposing offenses from finding success. The defensive tackle also handled kickoffs and took on PAT attempts midway through the year. Segura's versatility gave Jayton a decisive advantage against teams throughout the year.
Carson Sessums, a newcomer to Jayton, brought an offensive spark that Jayton needed from the backfield. Sessums’ speed and finesse made him the workhouse of the Jayton offense. The running back ate up yards and often scored against difficult opponents. Sessums also made several critical interceptions during district and in an early playoff game against Benjamin. Blayke Mays, another senior, will be missed for his constant support of his Jayton teammates.
Looking toward the future, there are many reasons to believe that the Jaybirds have the opportunity to find more success. Isaac King, Caleb Beck, Kaden Valerio, Justin Collins, Jaydon Rivera and Jayce Rivera will all return after another year to grow and work during the offseason. Also, other players like Hayden Nail and Kaden McDonald will look to make a significant impact. The group of freshmen coming into the program have fans looking forward to the future as well.
The 2021 season will be remembered as the year that new faces need to step up and make a difference. This sea son’s achievements prove that these young men rose to the occasion to pave the way for future success.
