Several area teams scrimmaged Thursday for the first time in the pandemic era—the Jayton Jaybirds, the Spur Bulldogs and the Valley Patriots sparred at a halfempty Jaybird Stadium—halfempty by design.
The University Interscholastic League’s Covid-19 risk mitigation guidelines call for 50 percent seating capacity with social distancing. Other changes include requiring coaches, athletes and spectators to wear masks in certain situations.
The host Jayton Jaybirds have made it to the state semifinals the past two years and are ranked in the top 5 in the 1A/ Division 2 preseason polls by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football and the Associated Press.
After Thursday night’s scrimmage the Spur Bulldogs announced this weekend that their football team was quarantined due to two Covid-19 positive cases. The games of August 28 versus Petersburg and September 4 against Meadow have been cancelled.
