The Gamma Eta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International celebrated its 83rd birthday March 1, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church in Spur. Eleven members and one visitor enjoyed a potluck meal, with three members joining the group by Zoom. Gamma Eta was organized on March 26, 1938, at the Hilton Hotel in Lubbock, Texas. Miss Ela Lee Carter, past president and honorary founder, was present for that first meeting.
As an icebreaker, Janie Wigley of Crosbyton presented a short history on photography. Terri Egerton of Lubbock called the business meeting to order. Debbi Ball of Spur highlighted recent activities of Alpha State Texas Educational Foundation. Members were encouraged to register for the 92nd Texas State Organization Convention to be held in Denton, June 17–19, 2021.
After having cake to celebrate the birthday, Debbi Ball instructed members present and on Zoom how to make fairy lights. Members enjoyed the time of craft and fellowship as they worked together to make the lights. Ball had instructed the technique in January 2020 at the Spectacular Texas Art Retreat (STAR) at Camp Allen, Navasota, Texas.
Gamma Eta’s next meeting will be Monday, April 12, 2021, at the Lubbock Christian University library. The program, “Celebrating National Parks,” will be presented by Tiffany Harkins of Lubbock.
