The Gamma Eta Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International held its meeting of December 6, 2021, at First United Methodist Church in Spur. Fourteen members attended, with four of those member attending by Zoom. Gamma Eta also welcomed two visitors, Samantha Hardin of Spur and Area 12 coordinator Sonja Hanks from Snyder. Hanks brought greetings from Texas State Organization president Shalan Inmon and shared information concerning the TSO Lubbock Convention scheduled for June 2022.
Following her announcements, Hanks presented a program titled “Underground Railroad Quilt Symbols: Fact or Folklore.” Over a ninemonth period, Hanks had attended a quilting class in Lubbock in which she pieced together a quilt with symbols that told the story of slaves seeking freedom during the Civil War. Each quilt square told a piece of the story of how quilts played an important role in guiding those seeking freedom a way of escape.
After the program, Terri Egerton of Lubbock called the meeting to order. The first order of business was to welcome new member Candace Zarate of Spur. Members were encouraged to pick up prospect cards and look for women educators to invite for membership. K Dee Anderson reported that a letter was being prepared to mail to the school districts in Cottle, Crosby, Dickens, Kent, King and Motley Counties inviting educators to send proposed projects to our chapter with one or more being chosen for funding. Egerton reminded members to volunteer for jobs involved with the TSO Lubbock Convention
Alpha State Texas Educational Foundation (ASTEF) has a Fall Stewardship Campaign ongoing. Janie Wigley of Allen reminded the members that a donation to ASTEF is tax deductible and can be done by PayPal or check. More information is available at astef.org.
Debbi Ball of Spur presented the Gamma Eta Angel to Chelsea Read of Matador. Members adjourned the meeting by singing the Delta Kappa Gamma song.
