After going without consumer fuel for more than a year and a half, Kent County residents—and motorists passing through— may soon have cause to rejoice again. Since midsummer 2021, when supplies became intermittent at the shuttered Farmers Co-op on Highway 70 in Jayton, there was no place in the 903-square-mile county to buy gas.
But when local contractor and businessman Phillip Wright placed the successful bid for the store and pump property April 4, hope once again shone on the horizon.
Wright, reached by phone at his Aspermont hardware store April 24, said that fuel should be available again “in 30 to 60 days.” Supplier Legacy Fuels, of Snyder, has already been out to inspect pumps. Electronics for the selfservice card-only pumps

Wright also has plans to open a convenience store on the north side of Jayton, on the site of another shuttered service station.
“It’s going to happen,” said Wright. “My plans are to serve the community, to put something out there that meets a need.”
