Guthrie 63, Motley County 45—When the season started, the only 15-1A girls’ basketball team to be ranked in the Texas Basketball Coaches Association’s Top 25 were the Lady Matadors of Motley County. Since then they have taken a few hard losses, including Friday night, when they hosted the Lady Jags of Guthrie.
The Lady Jaguars are now sitting alone at the top of the 15-1A district standings with a 5-1 district record.
Motley County drops to 3-2 in district and at the halfway point joins Spur and Patton Springs in vying for one of the third tickets to the playoffs.
Spur 42, Patton Springs 37—Going into Thursday night’s game, Patton Springs’s Lady Rangers had the top ticket out of district, being tied at 3-1 with Guthrie and being the only team to beat Guthrie in district so far.
But the 2019 district champions lost a close one Thursday night to Spur’s Spurettes and dropped down to second place and join Spur and Motley County at 3-2.
Jayton 45, Paducah 22—Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader didn’t draw as much attention as the boys’ nightcap. But it was no less important from the perspective of the Jayton girls, who had a must-win situation in their home court against winless Paducah.
Alana Croft scored nine points and Harley Smith added eight more to lead Jayton (12-16, 2-3) which remains in the district playoff race at the halfway point with the win.
Had Paducah pulled off the upset on the road, it might have crippled the Lady Jays’ ability to snag the third and final seed in the six-team district.
