The library lost a dear friend recently with the passing of Jon Shipp. Jon, our local beekeeper, brought his “girls” (honeybees) to our summer reading program several times. He loved to teach the children all about bees. He always donated honey when the library had a fundraiser. He will be missed. A memorial donation has been made to the Friends of the Library in Jon’s name.
The library would like to thank Marilyn Reid for the donation of a reproduced copy of a cook book by the Woman’s Missionary Society of the First Baptist Church Spur, Texas from December 8, 1923. The copy belonged to her mother, Billie Sonnamaker, who lived the last 50 years of her life in Spur. The copy will be proudly displayed in the “Hometown Corner” of the library.
The library board of trustees has a new board member. The board voted on, and the city council approved the nomination of, Ann Walker to the board. Walker has deep ties to Dickens County. Her grandfather, Stephen Austin, moved to Dickens in 1891. He helped set up the town of Dickens, and in 1899 was a member of the first Dickens County commissioners court.

Also donated to the library this week was the electrifying new adventure, “Obsession,” a Teddy Fay novel by Stuart Woods and Brett Battles featuring Stone Barrington.
