You can’t win a football game in the first quarter, but you can lose one there.
Such was the case for the Spur Bulldogs as they fell to the district champion Knox City Greyhounds 86–38 on Friday night. Spur would be outscored 24–0 in the first quarter and 36–22 in the second quarter to trail Knox City by 38 points at the half and only one possession away from being 45’d.
To the credit of the Bulldogs, they came out fighting hard in the third and matched the Greyhounds score for score, pushing the game into the fourth quarter before Knox City could finally claim the magic lead to end the game. The bread and butter for the Greyhounds was senior running back #3 Tres Frausto, who carried the ball 15 times for 403 yards and 8 touchdowns. He was more than the Bulldogs could handle.
The loss eliminated any post-season hopes Spur would have for this season. After the game, coach Tate Clark could be overheard talking to his boys on the sideline. He praised them for their fight, he pointed out their youth (only one starting senior), and encouraged them to focus in the off season to capitalize on their talent and to be a team to be reckoned with next season. He also encouraged them to demonstrate the type of heart and fight required as they travel to Paducah next Friday night hoping to finish the season strong.
While the season that started in quarantine has ended in disappointment, there is much to smile at for the future.
Sophomore Cory Hamilton continues his strong play. He carried the ball 19 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns, caught five passes for 92 yards and a touchdown, and contributed 5 tackles.
Junior Kolbey Adams caught four passes for 29 yards and a touchdown, and led the team with six tackles.
Junior Nick Ortiz flashed at the quarterback position, lofting several nice deep passes and finishing 6 for 10 with 100 yards passing and two touchdowns.
Junior Le’Zhane Walker ran 10 times for 74 yards, and junior defensive back Austin Fulmer is routinely seen as a jack-of-alltrades, a model of hustle and one who contributes play after play on defense.
Next year also anticipates the return of sophomore quarterback Gunnir Bateman, who was lost for the season with a shoulder injury. It would be nice to see the Bulldogs end their season on a high note in Paducah and come back next year ready to cash in on their obvious talent.
