In the 1930 Spur 11-man football team season, the Bulldogs set the all-time Texas state record with the most points ever scored in a high school football game when they demolished the Lorenzo Hornets on Nov. 7, 1930, 186 to 0.
Earlier in that same 1930 schedule, Spur destroyed Estelline 142–0, for two 100-point games in the same season, a feat that no Bulldog team had ever matched until now. History happened this past Friday night at home in Jones Stadium in Spur by the six-man, Division 1 Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs blew past the Paducah Dragons 100 to 54 in front of the hometown crowd on senior night, culminating in an undefeated district season, the 7-1A title, and a trip to the playoffs.
Had UIL not implemented a mercy rule for six-man football in 1938, when six-man football became a sanctioned sport, who knows what the score might have been? The Spur-Paducah game ended at the half because of the 46-point difference automatically triggering the mercy rule. (11-man Texas high school football has no such rule, although it does have some provisions to speed up play in the second half of lopsided games. UIL voted against enactment of a mercy rule for 11-man in 2014.)
The Spur-Paducah game was the kind that fans, families and players dream of.
According to third-year head coach Tate Clark, “Last week was the first game since O’Donnell that we have had our starting core healthy.” (The O’Donnell game was played September 24.)
November 4 was the final regular game for the Bulldogs, who ended the season 9–1, their only blemish coming at the hands of the Motley County Matadors, who have been ranked number one in the state in Division 2 six-man football all season long.
Clark continued, “Our run game has been phenomenal this year with two kids going over the 1,000-yard mark in the season, so far.” Such real estate being ground out by running backs Corey Hamilton and Le’Zhane Walker is even more notable considering that in the last four of five Bulldogs games, they have 45’d their opponents and only played one half.
The Bulldogs have little time to savor their district crown, however. The bi-district playoff will be Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. in Hermleigh at Cardinal Stadium against the Meadow Broncos.
In looking ahead to playoff game, Clark said, “The line has done a pretty good job opening holes up for the backs. We still need to get better at stopping people on late downs and our rotations on defense versus the pass. We have shown improvement but we aren’t where we want to be yet.”
He added, “Meadow has some speed so I’m hoping to do like we did in week two and corral their faster kids to the middle.” Spur defeated Meadow in week two 65 to 20, however, as an Texas football fan knows, anything can happen on any given Friday night.
EDITOR'S NOTE
The UIL sanctioned sixman football in 1938, but the Mercy Rule was not created until 1939, and teams could option out of it. It was made mandatory for six-man sometime in the 1950s.
