Saturday night found key personnel of The Texas Spur in Sagerton, about 15 minutes east of Aspermont.
We had chosen to spend our entertainment dollars on “Hee Haw,” the communitywide talent show based on the long-running TV variety show that ran from the seventies, all the way into the late nineties in syndication.
Sagerton, a town with a population of 115, has been putting on this show for 50 years, with only local talent. In addition, they provide a brisket meal and a variety of mouth-watering pies.
The pre-show music was toe-tapping, and the variety show itself was hilarious. The commitment of Sagerton residents to create a good time for five decades was inspiring.
When you live in a small town like Spur, you know how important it is to get folks to come out and support entertainment events, fundraisers and festivals. Nothing is more demoralizing to volunteers and organizers to invest their time, energy and creativity to put on an event and have only a handful of people show up.
To enable our readers to know what nearby small towns are doing, we publish The Texas Spur Country Roundup every week on our regional page. The behemoth that is Lubbock tends to vacuum up dollars for entertainment, shopping and healthcare from small towns within an hour or so.
We try to remind locals that there are plenty of fun things to do just as close—or closer than—Lubbock.
The Sagerton Hee Haw is a good example.
It’s 59 minutes from downtown Spur to Sagerton, only 38 minutes from Jayton to Sagerton. The show cost $7.50 and the brisket supper was $12.
By comparison, if you were to attend the upcoming Travis Tritt concert at the new Buddy Holly Hall in Lubbock, the cost of a ticket is $45 to $99. Just like Sagerton, you could eat at the same facility, but the ribeye at the Rave On restaurant at the Buddy Holly Hall would set you back almost $60, including tip and iced tea.
Lubbock is no longer an “about an hour” trip. The city is sprawling west toward New Mexico. The relatively new HEB grocery store, at 114th Street, is 95 miles from Jayton. The newest shopping center in the Hub City is found at 128th Street.
Getting to Lubbock is only half the battle; the other part of the trek is getting through Lubbock with its Loops, flyovers and detours.
Sagerton had no such snafus.
