COVID-19, now at the pandemic stage, has been the cause of many event cancellations.
The Texas Library Association’s Annual Conference to be held March 24–27, 2020 in Houston, was one of the victims. I received word on Wednesday that the conference had been cancelled due to health concerns. The association is working on a virtual conference and will let us know when it will be.
I have read through the library channels that there have been library closures in other parts of the U.S. Hopefully the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will get this under control before we have to take such drastic measures. In the meantime we do what we can to prevent the spread of germs. The public computers and keyboards are wiped down with disinfectant daily. The counters and door handles are also wiped daily. This has been the practice at the library long before COVID-19. Until this pandemic has passed we will have latex gloves available upon request. Hand sanitizer can be found in many locations around the library.
Every day here at the library we get requests for particular titles, genres, and authors. But one such request has been made more than any other by our younger patrons. A series of graphic novels called “Dog Man” is what these youngsters are wanting the library to get more of.
Dav Pilkey, author and illustrator of the “Captain Underpants,” series is also the creator of the “Dog Man” series. We have had the first two, but they wanted more. I’m pleased to say their wish has been granted. The next four in the series are available for them to check out. I have to say the titles will get your attention. Number three in the series is “Dog Man: A Tale of Two Kitties,” number four is “Dog Man: Dog Man and Cat Kid,” number five “Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas,” and number six is “Dog Man: Brawl of the Wild.”
We also received three newer released DVDs recently. We received the 2019 movie “Frozen II.” It is the sequel to Disney’s 2013 blockbuster “Frozen” that continues the adventures of Elsa and her sister, Anna.
We have 2019’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt as a faded television actor and his stunt double striving to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age. In 2018’s “Aquaman,” Jason Mamoa plays Arthur Curry, the human born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis.
New to the library thanks to a donation is 2010s “The Quick and the Dead” starring Sam Elliot and Kate Capshaw, based on the book by Louis L’Amour. “Long Range” by C.J. Box is a new Joe Pickett suspense in which the Wyoming game warden investigates the murder of the wife of a prominent judge. This is available in large print.
Tracie Peterson’s “Secrets of my Heart” is our newest available in Christian fiction. It is also in large print format.
