The Highway 70 Yard Sale event on May 1 is back in a big way for this year. At press time Monday afternoon, the event had almost 50 yard sales planned for Saturday in a 94-mile stretch from Jayton to Turkey.
According to organizer Joan Day, Dickens County alone has 30 yard sales planned, and she expects more to come in.
Towns already participating with yard sales include: Jayton, Spur, Dickens, Roaring Springs, Matador and Turkey.
Last year, with Covid-19 concerns, the Highway 70 Yard Sale was delayed until May 23, but this year with vaccinations more widespread and pandemic restrictions all but eliminated in Texas, the number of sales exceed last year by three-fold or more.
In Matador the Variety Store and New to You, two downtown stores, will be participating, and the Variety Store will be selling roasted corn.
If you’re thinking of having a yard sale, you have until Thursday, April 29 to get on the list. For Dickens and Kent counties, contact Joan Day at (806) 271-4780 and for Motley and Hall counties, contact Shane Jones at (806) 347-2820.
Shoppers should be ready to make the most of this once-a-year event by getting small bills and change and a list of yard sales by town.
“The maps will be ready and will be at area businesses,” Day said, “In Spur you’ll be able to get it at Spur Hardware, Lawrence Brothers, Dollar General, Dixie Dog, Star Feed and Seed, whoever’s open.”
