Highway 70 Yard Sale could reach 50 locations this year

COMING UP MAY 6

As of Monday, 25 yard sales have been reserved for the Spur, Dickens and Jayton areas for the Highway 70 Yard Sale on Saturday, May 6, according to coordinator Joan Day of Spur. This time last year there were 20 sales reserved for the Dickens and Kent county areas by Monday, and that higher number indicates the sales may be even stronger this year.

North of U.S. Highway 82, Shane Jones of the Variety Store in Matador reports that there are 15 yard sale locations with one in Doughtery, one in Roaring Springs and the rest in Matador, including some downtown store locations. Jones she expects even more to come in. This time last year north of U.S. 82 had 10 sales, so options have grown for those locations as well, and Jones said she expects even more sales to get on the list by Saturday.

It’s a great way for locals and visitors alike to find a hidden treasure, collectible or simply a good deal.

“I expect at least 30 sales, but that number could grow. 30 plus sales is a definitely possibility,” Day said. Since the 2000s the Highway 70 Yard Sale, featuring stops along the route from Jayton to Turkey, has been on event calendar of every junk picker and bargain hunter in this region. Dickens/Kent coordinator Joan Day has personally worked with the event since 2010.

To sign up to get on the list of sales, contact Day at (806) 269-3141 if you will be having a sale south of U.S. 82, or Shane Jones at (940) 475-0226 if you will be having a sale north of U.S. 82, and one of them will get your name and address added to the list. This year, there is no fee for vendors to get on the list. The last day to get on the vendors’ list is Thursday, May 4.

Customers of Spur Storage Units in Spur and Dickens are welcome to use onsite space to set up a sale. Call The Texas Spur office at (806) 271-3381 if you have any questions.

The list of vendors by town will be posted on Facebook pages, including The Texas Spur’s, on Friday morning. As a buyer, please remember to have small bills and coin change on hand for purchases. A vendor cannot leave their sale to get change, and cannot anticipate the number of buyers who may have $20 bills for a 25-cent item.

Starting early may require that you need a place to stay if you are coming in from out of town. There are rooms still available at the Back Door Inn in Spur (call 806271-4780 for reservations for your Friday night stay or relax after a full day of shopping by staying Saturday night). In Spur there is also the Mesquite Inn, (806) 422-0942, and in Dickens the Double H Motel, (806) 623-5512.

In Turkey there is Hotel Turkey, (806) 423-1151, and in Matador, Hotel Matador at (806) 347-2939. There are also Air BnB accommodations in Dickens and Kent Counties.
