Hindman begins tenure as Dickens Emergency Management Coordinator

Dickens County has a new Emergency Management Coordinator, Matt Hindman, following the longtime tenure of Wess Abbott.

Hindman is a native of Spur and a 2003 graduate of Spur High School. A graduate of Texas Tech, Hindman lives with his family between Spur and Dickens and has worked as a fireman for the Lubbock Fire Department for ten years.

According to Hindman, firemen for Lubbock, are on for 24 hours and off for 48 hours. The flexibility in that scheduling allows him to fulfill the EMC role, which is a part-time position—as Abbott did before him.

Hindman said that the focuses of the EMC position include working with the county commissioners, pursuing grants, and working with the South Plains Association of Governments

sure that Dickens County is in compliance with their regulations in the area of public safety.

The new position appealed to Hindman because, “I like the public service aspect of it.” He said that was the same reason he became a fireman, to help others.
