House burns in Dickens County Feb. 14

Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on February 14, Spur, Dickens and McAdoo fire departments were dispatched to a house fire four miles south of Dickens on Highway 70. One occupant who was in bed asleep was awakened when his blankets caught fire.

The male occupant in his late 50s was able to escape, but lost his home and possessions, and the Red Cross has been reached to help assist the occupant.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Suzanne Garcia Reese has been posting information on Facebook about the gentleman whose house burned. The Texas Spur reached out to her about the challenges he faces.

“He does speak English, but his first language is Spanish, and I am helping in translation,” Reese said.

She described his situation in a statement she posted on Facebook, next to her photo of his collapsed house.

“He said that two minutes after he walked out of it, it collapsed from the fire. He will be staying at a cabin in Dickens, the Lazy Tin Roof, for the next few days. Red Cross has been notified,” said Reese. “Community help is greatly appreciated with anything, because as you can see, he lost everything. Donations may be taken to him at the Lazy Tin Roof. If he is not there, items may be left at the back door per his instructions.” Information on clothing sizes was being shared in a series of Facebook posts.

Reese said that the occupant had lived in his house in Dickens for more than thirty years.

Spur VFD posted on their Facebook page, “We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have multiple working smoke detectors in your home. . . . Please keep this gentleman in your thoughts and prayers as this weather is making this incident even more challenging.”
