In their week-two matchup against Aspermont Hornets, senior quarterback Joel Williams and Jayton Jaybirds wanted to utilize their passing attack early and often.
“As a team, we look at every single game early in the season as an opportunity for us to get better,” said Williams. “We know we can run the ball and that is what we’re good at, but we wanted to really expand our game and work on our ability to pass the ball at an elite level.”
By the time the game was concluded, Williams threw for five touchdowns to lead Jayton over Aspermont 45–0 by halftime. Jaydon Rivera and Ayden Salazar both recorded two touchdown receptions followed by Carson Sessums with a touchdown reception of his own. Isaac King scored on a short touchdown run while converting four of five PAT attempts. The Jayton offense found many opportunities to spread the ball across the field, efficiently gaining 291 in total offense during the first half.
Defensively, Jayton held the Hornets to 51 total yards without yielding a first down. Jace Rivera, Julian Segura, Kaden Valerio and Caleb Beck give the Aspermont offense fits all night by making several huge tackles in the Hornet backfield. As the game ended, the Jayton defense proved to other teams in the state that offensive coordinators will need to do their homework before they encounter the Jaybirds.
Jayton’s next game will be an away matchup against the Wilson Mustangs on Thursday, September 9. The Junior high will make their season debut at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity squads will play at 7:30 p.m. Jayton’s JV will play an away matchup against Roby 7 p.m. on September 7 at 7 p.m.
As Jayton looks to continue their winning ways, senior leaders like Williams and Sessums will need to lead a “young and hungry” group of athletes. Spectators will look forward to seeing how the game’s will turn out at all levels.
