If the Jayton Jaybirds were going to come out with a win in their home opener against the Knox City Greyhounds, they would have to overcome a 30–22 deficit entering the fourth quarter.
And did they ever.
The Jayton defense, led by a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Jaydon Rivera, caused five turnovers in the fourth to defeat the Greyhounds 46–30.
A Jaybird squad that lost All-State spread back Pecos Smith to graduation last year now relies on a plethora of offensive weapons to make an impact. The Jaybirds now have a three-headed monster attack in senior Carson Sessums (132 yards), Rivera (48 yards, 3 touchdowns), and sophomore Isaac King (19 yards rushing, 1 touchdown, and 72 yards receiving). Allowing all three backs to utilize their talents afforded Jayton the opportunity to remain fresh heading into the deciding fourth quarter.
When asked how he felt about his young and hungry Jayton squad, head coach Josh Stanaland said, “I’m excited! We have a great group of young guys who are fighting to become one of our leaders.” Stanaland later referred to the fact that none of the running backs had more than 15 carries. This running back committee approach wielded by the Jaybirds provides an opportunity for Jayton’s offensive attack to be difficult to predict by other teams in the future.
Senior quarterback Nathaniel Williams was sharp in this opening game, completing eight passes for 138 yards. Senior Julian Segura and freshman Ayden Salazar both recorded touchdown receptions. Junior wide receiver Caleb Beck’s lone catch was a highlight of the game when he jumped high in the sky to snag a Williams pass before falling to the turf.
The story of the night was the Jaybird defense. Junior Kaden Valerio, along with Beck, Sessums, Rivera and King gave the Greyhounds fits in the fourth quarter. Jace Rivera also recorded key tackles and a fumble recovery. As the game ended, a clear message was sent to the crowd in attendance. The Jayton Jaybirds are young and hungry—and have a high ceiling of potential.
Jayton will have a chance to continue their winning ways as they take on the Aspermont Hornets at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Jaybird Stadium. The local rivals will both look to put on a show and compete to the best of their abilities with one another.
