A huge crowd gathered for homecoming festivities at Jaybird Stadium to see the Jayton Jaybirds play the Roby Lions.
This Jayton squad, led by senior quarterback Joel Williams and senior spread back Carson Sessums, has found a firm footing in their non-district schedule against solid opponents. The Lions, who featured a quick offense, provided a quality opponent on a beautiful homecoming evening.
Following a strong showing from both sides of the ball, the Jayton Jaybird defeated the Roby Lions 64–22. Williams, Sessums, Jaydon Rivera, Caleb Beck and Ayden Salazar carried the Jaybirds on the ground and in the passing game. The Jaybirds continued to place pressure on their opponent with a balanced offensive attack. Kicker Julian Segura has continued to bring improvement to the kicking game, converting several PAT attempts.
Defensively, the Jaybirds were able to cause a few turnovers and keep the Lion offense at bay. Junior defensive linemen Kaden Valerio returned from missing last week's game against Petersburg imposed his will on the Lions.
Jace Rivera, who has provided consistent defense for Jayton, looked sharp in the contest. Putting pressure on the quarterback while defending the pass downfield is difficult in six-man football. However, the Jaybirds have shown that their discipline and hustle can make a difference.
While the Jaybirds took control late in the game, they struggled to close out their resilient opponent. It seemed that every time Jayton had the opportunity to end the game early, the Lions were able to score and stay in the game. However, Roby proved that they were unwilling to quit against the team that gained a decisive advantage. When the horn blew, the community of Jayton celebrated the beginning of an exciting homecoming weekend.
Jayton (6–0) will begin their district season against Southland on Thursday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. from Jaybird stadium. The Junior High teams will play at 6 p.m.
