The Jayton Jaybirds, who were originally scheduled to play Southland and then were rescheduled to play Throckmorton, wound up taking on the Garden City Bearkats last Friday night.
Traveling to Garden City, the Jaybirds have become used to changing their plans and learning to adapt to a new opponent. After a very quick start, the Jaybirds overwhelmed the Bearkats on both sides of the ball to win the contest by halftime 61–15.
Offensively, Pecos Smith led the hungry rushing attack with 13 carries for 141 yards amassing five touchdowns. Smith’s first touchdown came on Jayton’s opening play from the line of scrimmage. He was able to take advantage of every opportunity to help Jayton pull away with the lead early.
Quarterback Joel Williams connected with Caleb Valerio and his brother Nathaniel Williams for two touchdowns. Smith also completed a touchdown pass on his big night. Kicker Tripp Scott continued staying consistent converting five PAT attempts.
Defensively, the Jaybirds were able to cause three turnovers at Scott recovered a fumble and brought in an interception. Senior Devon Jones recovered a fumble as well.
The Jaybirds swarmed after the ball all evening, allowing only one first down and 41 total yards from scrimmage.
Instead of one Jaybirds defender standing out alone, many players contributed to the effort, along with several players who have played on JV this year. Smith, Scott, Jones, Valerio, Mason Long, and Kaden Valerio have proven to be tough to score against this season.
The Jaybirds will play a district contest against the Guthrie Jaguars in a home matchup Friday, October 23 at 7:30pm. This game will serve as the senior night for the Jaybirds and their families.
As the district season continues, Jayton will look to make continued improvements as they look to make noise in the playoffs.
