The Jayton Jaybirds flew into Guthrie Friday night and once again wrapped things up at the half, defeating the Guthrie Jaguars 52-0.
“Offensively I thought it was a good game,” said head coach Josh Stanaland. “We spread the ball around and got a lot of guys involved and we were efficient on the offensive side.”
The Jaybird offense once again scored on every single possession and continues to roll. Sean Stanaland led the team in passing, going four-fo-four for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Bode Ham led the rushing attack with 56 yards on eight carries and a score.
While the defense did pitch yet another shutout, Coach Stanaland noted that anareaforimprovementbecame apparent. “I thought defensively against the run we were really good, I think we held them to significant negative yardage, but we gave up close to 200 yards passing and that’s probably close to our season total. We’ve definitely got to clean some stuff up there before next week because Motley County will take advantage if we don’t.”
Ironically, even though the defense allowed the Guthrie air attack a little too much room, on Friday night it was the defense that ultimately slammed the door and ended the game at the half. With just over a minute to play in the second quarter, leading by 44, and with Guthrie in the red zone threatening to score, Colt Gentry rushed into the backfield, hit the quarterback, stripped the ball, and raced 65 yards for the game sealing touchdown.
Stanaland noted, “[Colt] was all over the place, he was in the backfield all night long. He obviously had the 65-yard strip fumble recovery to put it away. We’re in a position right now where we’re trying to play nine guys and they can all play. Getting everybody the right amount of reps is tough, but he’s getting to the point where it’s kind of hard to take him off the field because he keeps making plays.”
The Jaybirds host Motley County in Jayton Friday night with the district championship at stake, somethingStanalandnoted “ought to bring out the best in us.”
