Itwasadominanteffort by the Jaybirds that took advantage of the mercy rule Thursday night to defeat the Guthrie Jaguars 60-8 at the half. The game was a one-sided affair the entire night that saw the Jaybirds outgain the Jaguars 258 yards to 123 yards, outnumber the Jaguars 10 to 4 in first downs, and lead the turnover battle 3-0. The lone blemish on the night was to allow a first-quarter kickoff return for a touchdown. The rest of the game was Jaybird total domination. Rushing leaders for the Jaybirds were Ayden Salazar and Bode Ham, who each carried the ball three times for an identical 76 yards and a touchdown apiece.
After the game head coach Josh Stanaland commented, “Proud of our kids, thought we had a good week of practice, I feel like the plan was good, the kids executed. I hate that we gave up the kick return to give up our shutout, but the kids played with good effort.” When asked if there was a player who stood out on the night, Stanaland pointed out that Jaydon Rivera won the 1A helmet sticker from Texas 1A Fan. “He had an interception and had a strip down here that he took back for a touchdown,” said Stanaland. “He did a really good job. Just getting him back, getting Ayden Salazar back, getting some of those older and experienced guys back on the field for us has been really good. I thought Jaydon did a really good job for us tonight offensively and defensively.”
The Jaybirds next travel to Motley County for what has become a yearly rivalry between the two programs. “The biggest thing we’re up against is a solid program and really good coach,” Stanaland said. “They obviously graduated a lot of kids from that state runner-up last year, but the tradition doesn’t graduate. I’ve seen them on film, I’ve seen them live. They play fast, they execute, they’re Motley County and they’re gonna play really really hard.”
Motley head coach Mike Bigham’s “gonna get the most out of them,” Stanaland warned. “We’re gonna have to execute, we’re gonna have to play fast and be physical, but I love our kids and I wouldn’t bet against our kids ever.”
