The Jayton Jaybirds improved upon their perfect record when they defeated the Patton Springs Rangers 52 to 0 last Friday night at home.
Fans in attendance were treated to a solid defensive effort along with a balanced offensive game plan. Senior quarterback Joel Williams and sophomore spread back Isaac King each threw touchdown passes to freshman Ayden Salazar. Salazar’s blocking and speed down the field have made him a consistent threat to score for the Jaybirds.
Carson Sessums scored three rushing touchdowns on seven carries, while King added two rushing touchdowns of his own. King provided the offensive play of the night as two Rangers attempted to push him out of bounds at the end of a long run. However, as King’s body almost landed out of bounds, the young ball carrier was able to keep his balance secure enough to continue his run toward the end zone. When King crossed the line, the hometown crowd roared in approval.
Defensively, the Jaybirds caused three turnovers and held the Ranger offense to only 56 total yards. All season long, the Jaybird defense has shown speed, athleticism and physicality against other opponents. Behind Kaden Valerio, Julian Segura, Jaydon Rivera, Caleb Beck, Jace Rivera, King and Sessums, the Jaybird defense has become dangerous on the defensive side of the ball. Julian Segura connected on five PAT attempts. In the past two games, he has missed only one of his field goals.
The undefeated Jaybirds now look to travel to Matador to face the undefeated Motley County Matadors on Friday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. Motley County is ranked number one in the state by most media outlets.
Fans may remember last season’s game when the Jay birds scored a close win over the Matadors at home. This year, the Matadors return all of their players from last year. Fans in attendance will look forward to a highly competitive ball game for the district championship.
