The Jayton Jaybirds hosted the Ira Bulldogs in their second scrimmage as a final tune-up to work out the kinks on both sides of the ball. Jayton showed great improvement from their first scrimmage, as the players are starting to feel as if they are in game shape. The sweltering Texas heat has been a factor for all teams to deal with this summer. Despite hot temperatures, the Jaybirds again played their scrimmage with the threat of storm clouds looming.
Senior quarterback Aaron Hernandez looked sharp and led the Jaybirds with 10 completions for 223 yards and 4 touchdowns. The most notable stat for Hernandez was that he didn’t throw an interception. As the scrimmage continued, spectators beheld that both teams on the field have an opportunity to make some noise in the playoffs this season. The Jaybirds were able to navigate through the off-season, maintaining a healthy roster.
Now that the preseason is over, the Jaybirds look to begin their quest for a strong season against the Anton Bulldogs at home on Thursday, August 26 at 6 p.m. Head football coach Josh Stanaland believes that his team will face a strong test in their season opener. “Anton is a good football team, with quick running backs and strong, physical guys on defense. They are bringing back three starters from a nine-win football team.” The Jaybirds, after a long off-season accompanied by two-a-day practices, are excited to begin their season.
In spite of the expectations coming from state experts, the motto for Jayton has not changed. “Tough People Win” continues to be their daily mantra in every drill, film session and workout. The goal has been to not focus on outside opinions and deal with only what they can control. “I want to continue to see the kids progress, getting better day by day and week by week,” said Stanaland.
It’s football time in Texas, and everyone will look forward to cheering on their team under the bright lights. For the Jayton Jaybirds, the goal is the same every day: focus on today and allow tomorrow to worry about itself. There is no doubt that the town will be present to support their favorite team.
