The Jayton Jaybirds began their district season against the Southland Eagles last Thursday night in a home matchup.
Jayton entered the season with a few unknowns. Losing key seniors the previous year meant that new faces would have to step up and make a difference. Players like Joel Williams, Carson Sessums and Kaden Valerio have proved to be players that this young team can rely upon to help the Jaybirds succeed. However, going into district play, others would have to step up for a team that wants to play football deep into the playoffs.
Following a dynamic rushing attack from junior Jaydon Rivera and tough defense, the Jaybirds defeated the Southland Eagles 47–0. Rivera, who has proved to be a pivotal contributor to the team, shredded the Eagles with thunderous runs.
A strong offseason for Rivera has paid dividends for the junior who has become a consistent threat in the backfield. “Personally, we want to continue to improve our blocking in the run game,” said Rivera. “When we become improve our physicality, our offense will become more dangerous.” When interviewed, Rivera spoke highly of the way the offensive line has been blocking throughout the season.
The Jaybirds relied upon Cameron Harris, Jace River, and Ayden Salazar to keep Southland from doing anything offensively. This season has proved that the Jaybirds can utilize many weapons on both sides of the ball to keep teams on their toes. As the season continues, added reps for younger players can allow Jayton to allow their depth to keep this squad fresh during games.
The Jaybirds, now 7–0 on their season, will head into a bye week. Players who have nursed nagging aches and pains will have the opportunity to rest before they head into the throngs of the district season. Jayton’s next opponent will be the Guthrie Jaguars on October 22 at 7:30 p.m. The Junior High team will play this week against Paducah on October 14.
Even though Jayton has had prior success on the field, head coach Josh Stanaland will remind his team that the season is brand new with ballgames that bring playoff ramifications.
Fans in attendance will be excited to cheer on their team to victory.
