Credit Patton Springs for playing hard Thursday night in Jayton, but the Jaybirds just had more firepower as they 45’d the Rangers 56-0 at halftime.
Credit the Jaybirds for overcoming what could have been a week of distractions and staying focused to get the job done.
Head coach Josh Stanaland said after the game, “We talked to our kids this week about there being a lot going on. We had senior night going on tonight, we had football sweetheart and beau going on tonight, we’ve got four members of the team headed to the state cross country meet tomorrow. We talked about dealing with those distractions, coming out and being clean, executing; surgical like precision; to their credit they did. I thought we had a good week of practice this week. We looked fresh, we looked fast, and the kids executed and did a good job. I’m proud of them.”
The victory put an exclamation mark on the regular season for the Jaybirds who end up 4-0 in district (7-3 overall) to claim the district title. “It's awesome!” said Stanaland. “Any time you win a district championship it’s a big deal. For these seniors to have won three out of the last four is a big deal.”

Now the 8th-ranked Jaybirds travel to Benjamin Thursday night to battle the 9th-ranked Paducah Dragons for the bi-district championship. According to Stanaland it should be an excellent battle. “We’ve been fortunate… we’ve got a chance to win our 7th consecutive bi-district championship, but Paducah is not going to let it be easy. They’re good. They’re ranked in the top 10. They’re 8-2 and their only losses are to Follett who is a D1 top ten school and Benjamin who is the number one ranked team in division 2. So, they’re good, we’re good, it’s going to be a fun atmosphere, it’s govving to be a fun game. It’s probably going to be a four-quarter battle, cause that’s normally what we do. It won’t surprise me if it comes down to the last possession.” The Jaybirds have made a living prevailing in tight ballgames this year, facing another one in the playoffs is right up their alley!
