As the weeks go on it’s more and more difficult to find anything negative about this Jaybird team.
Should we point out that Aspermont was able to convert on two 4th-down plays in the first quarter, even though the two conversions yielded no points and the Hornets, like three teams before them, were blanked on the scoreboard?
Should we point out that the Jaybirds only scored on four of their first five offensive plays, even though the one nonscoring play was a 36-yard pass completion from Sean Stanaland to Griff Reel?
The point is, these Jaybirds are rolling. They’re now on the fifth game in which their offense has not been stopped on a single drive. Now the fourth game in which they have shut a team off the scoreboard completely. On this night they outgained the Aspermont Hornets 226 to 45 and in just two quarters of play delivered a 48-0 mercy rule victory.
Bode Ham and Ayden Salazar combined for 124 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just four total carries. Reel led the receivers with 50 yards and one touchdown on just two catches. Four different Jaybirds tied for the team lead in tackles with nine.
Whatever they want to do, they do, and other teams don’t seem to get a say in it. Justin Collins continues to be a weapon, booming kickoffs into the end zone, and Friday night he also went 6 for 6 on twopoint kicks. It must be hard to find coaching points each week.
For now, Head Coach Josh Stanaland will just have to enjoy such a dominating win in front of his own homecoming crowd. “Obviously Jayton is incredibly special to me,” said Stanaland. “My kids are fourth-generation Jayton Jaybirds, so my roots here are very deep. I tell the kids all the time, “It’s very personal to me; the product we put on the field. I think it’s the greatest place in the world—it’s why I fought so hard to get back here when I did. There’s no place I’d rather be and to get a win on homecoming is pretty special.”
