The Jayton Jaybirds, coming off their bye week, traveled to Guthrie last Friday to face the Jaguars in their second district contest of the season. Having been undefeated all season, the Jaybirds have encountered teams hoping to blemish their perfect record. For the past several years, Guthrie has had the number of the Jaybirds when playing at their home field. Football experts often say that a district contest is difficult to win no matter the teams’ opposing records.
The Jaybirds overcame all pregame obstacles and soundly defeated the Guthrie Jaguars 64–16. The Jaybirds were dominant on both sides of the ball and proved that teams can improve throughout their season. Senior spread back Carson Sessums rushed for 155 yards on 12 carries while scoring six touchdowns. Sessums, an early newcomer to Jayton, has brought stability to the Jaybird offense as the lead back. Teams are becoming increasingly aware of the senior’s ability to score every time he has the ball in his hands.
Senior quarterback Joel Williams connected with junior wide receiver Caleb Beck on two touchdown passes. Beck, a newcomer to the varsity, has become an offensive threat due to his lanky frame and speed. “My love for this game is incomparable to anything,” said Beck.
“I wouldn’t want to be playing with anyone else but my brothers, and the feeling I receive when I walk on the field as a Jaybird is more than anything I can ever ask for!” Beck and the rest of the Jaybirds have become close friends throughout the season. Their bond makes a difference on and off the field.
Defensively, the Jaybirds allowed two early touchdowns in the first quarter. However, they adjusted in the second quarter and never allowed Guthrie to score again. The defense relies on their speed and physicality to opposing coaches fit in their game plan. Senior kicker Julian Segura converted all 8 of his PAT attempts. Segura's consistency in the special teams towards the end of the district season is coming together at the right time.
Jayton will face the Patton Springs Rangers on Friday, October 29, at Jaybird Stadium.
As the district season comes closer to ending, the Jaybirds will look to continue their bid toward the district championship.
