“Playing Spur always brings it out of us,” said Jayton Jaybirds head coach Josh Stanaland. “It’s been a traditional rivalry, so to get to line up against these guys is a lot of fun. We’ve got a ton of respect for them and for their program and for Coach Clark and Coach Conrad and their coaching staff. Just a good game, the kids played well and executed.”
Stanaland had a lot of reasons to smile Friday night as the Jayton Jaybirds defeated the Spur Bulldogs 63–6 before a packed Spur stadium. The Jaybirds took the opening kickoff, and four plays later Sean Stanaland hit Colt Gentry for the first score of the night.
On Spur’s first offensive possession it would be Gentry who would blow through the line to sack Ace Walker for a safety, and on Spur’s second offensive possession Gentry would gather up a fumble and return it for his second touchdown of the night.
With less than five minutes into the game Gentry led Jaybirds were already up 25–0.
“Colt’s a kid that is so consistent and so reliable. He seems to always be in the right place. He’s a great athlete, good kid, hard worker. We play him on that weak side defensive end quite a bitn which puts him outnumbered at times, but he’s able to do it because he’s so good with his hands and he’s good in space and he had a great game,” said Stanaland The other notable standout for the Jaybirds was junior wide receiver Griff Reel, who scored Jayton’s second touchdown on a 12yard end-around and then hauled in two long passes from Stanaland for second quarter touchdowns.
Stanaland noted, “Griff is just a phenomenal athlete, offensively we were able to get him behind the defense a couple of times. He’s a hard kid to overthrow so we just tell Sean to throw it as far as you can and he did.”
The Jaybirds finish the preseason at 6–0 and now turn their attention to district action as they host the 4–2 Aspermont Hornets for Homecoming on Friday night.
