As the fall air began to blow into Jayton Stadium, the Jaybirds looked to end their non-district schedule on a high note to continue their perfect season record. The Rotan Yellowhammers stood in their way, hoping to play the role of spoiler. Behind the rushing attack led by Tye Scogin and a stifling defense, the Jayton Jaybirds imposed their will on Rotan, defeating them 53-0.
From the beginning of the game, it was clear that the Jaybird defense would make life difficult for the Yellowhammers. The Rotan offense was unable to get anything going in the ground game or the passing attack, being held to negative 23 yards on offense. Even Cheyne, Thomas Mullen, Pecos Smith, Aaron Hernandez, Cameron Benavides, Caleb Valerio and Scogin never allowed anyone on offense to get comfortable.
Scogin led the way for Jay-ton on offense, running for three touchdowns and throwing for one. Smith and Mullen each scored one on the ground. Mullen’s touchdown was a highlight play of the game when he was almost knocked out of bounds at the 15-yard line but was able to spin his way out of the hands of the Rotan defender to scamper in for the score. Hernandez threw for a touchdown pass to open the game on a deep bomb to Benavides on the first play from scrimmage. Smith also added a receiving score.
The key for this Jayton squad has been trying to get healthy. Scogin and Hernandez have managed to look like their normal selves after being injured earlier in the season. Junior Tripp Scott is currently recovering from a hip injury. He will be figured back into the lineup over time. Injuries have forced younger players to gain more playing time while also getting more experience at the varsity level.
District season will begin on Friday, October 11 at home against the Guthrie Jaguars. Jayton’s goals remain the same: play games week by week while practicing hard to prepare for each opponent. A district championship that alluded the Jaybirds last year hangs in the balance. Before playoff noise can be made, the Jayton Jaybirds will focus on the district season.
