Congratulations are extended to Borden County football coach Trey Richey, who will be inducted into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022.
Richey, a 1986 graduate of Jayton High School who went on to a long-standing coaching career, is the only person to win a six-man football state championship as player, assistant coach and head coach. This season his Borden County Coyotes won the district title for the 14th year in a row.
In the 1985 state championship game against Christoval, Richey rushed for 461 yards and 8 TDs on 28 carries. His rushing yards are still a state championship game record, and his eight touchdowns are tied for the most with DeWayne Miles, who rushed for eight TDs in 1995. The game was played at McMurray University, which would later be where Richey would play college football and from which he would graduate.
