In their last away district game of the season, the Jayton Jaybirds dominated the Rule Bobcats 53 to 0. With one more district game to play, the Jaybirds are undefeated and look to win the district title that alluded them last season. The story of this season has been the same: take every workout, practice and game one at a time, while staying humble. This Jayton squad has high aspirations to make noise in November and December but have chosen not to get too far ahead of themselves. Veteran leadership has provided this team a stable foundation to keep the Jaybirds grounded and focused.
Rule was held to only 33 offensive yards by the stiff Jaybird defense. Seniors Thomas Mullen and Tye Scogin combined for 17 tackles and two fumble recoveries, while Evan Cheyne and Pecos Smith each amassed eight tackles apiece. The running game for Rule was abysmal against the Jayton attack. Smith and Cheyne both had the biggest hits in the game.
Smith led the way on the ground for the Jaybirds. His three carries all resulted in touchdowns. Over the last three games, Smith has scored six touchdowns on six carries. The junior has become a strong complement for Jayton to utilize at any time, allowing Scogin to rest during games. The development of Smith will pay dividends in the playoffs. Senior quarterback Aaron Hernandez threw for three touchdowns on 65 yards passing. Scogin received two touchdowns and Benavides scored on a touchdown from Hernandez as well. Junior Caleb Valerio scored a goal-line touchdown on the ground. Kicker Tripp Scott was perfect on every attempted PAT kick, along with Hernandez who kicked two PATs through the uprights.
Friday’s home game against Lueders-Avoca will be the Jaybirds last home district game of the season. Jayton will look to avenge their heartbreaking loss last season against the Raiders, who scored a last-second touchdown to win the district title. The Jaybirds know that a win will maintain their perfect season, gain the district title and put them in the right place mentally for the playoffs. Jaybird fans will arrive ready to cheer for their team.
