The Farmers Co-op Gin in Jayton, which served Kent County farmers, ranchers and the public for many years before shutting its doors in February 2022, will be the location of a tax sale auction next Monday, according to local officials.
Only the business personal property of the cooperative, and not its real estate, is subject to the sale, according to chief appraiser Cindy Watson of the Kent County Appraisal District.
The gin operation, which had seen a decline in business for some time, was also the last gas station available for the public to buy auto and diesel fuel in the county when it closed.
According to staff at the legal firm consulting on the tax lien, Perdue Brandon Collins Fielder & Mott of Lubbock, the co-op corporation no longer had an active board of directors, though Guy Galloway was the principal to whom notice of the tax sale was sent.
Watson explained how the auction would work, beginnng on site at 10 a.m. Monday morning. Interested bidders may inspect properties on the published list starting at 9 a.m.
The sheriff will then conduct an outcry auction of items beginning at the top of the list, and the auction will stop at the point that the sum of two amounts (back taxes plus court fees) is met. Perdue Brandon attorney Johnathan Galley will also be present.
The outstanding taxes total $15,882.69.
Cash or certified funds will be required for payment.
