Local Girl Scout Lainey Baldridge of Troop 7115 in Jayton was honored September 30 for her completion of the requirements for the Bronze Award, the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve.
Community service remains at the heart of Girl Scouting and was the focus for this special honor. Baldridge started her “Take Action” project by assessing community needs and chose to serve the Sparrow’s Nest Maternity Home because she loves the mission of this local Christ-centered organization — to help pregnant mothers in crisis who are in need of a long-term home.
Baldridge, who has been sewing since third grade, utilized her sewing skills and talents to construct 40+ burp cloths for the future moms and babies of Sparrow’s Nest. Fellow Girl Scout and friend Charlie Overbo assisted with some of the sewing, as did Baldridge’s grandmother Mildred Vaclavik, who taught her many of the basics of sewing.
Sparrow’s Nest Executive Director Tricia Edwards was excited to accept these handmade gifts and looks forward to blessing many mothers and babies with these tangible expressions of love and care. The burp cloths will be prayed over and kept in stored until the projected opening of the Sparrow’s Nest in early summer 2020.
