The Jayton Jaybirds traveled to take on the Petersburg Buffaloes last Friday night. The Jaybirds knew that their offense would have to score points early and often, looking to continue their undefeated season. However, following the dominating rushing attack by Carson Sesssums (272 rushing yards and seven touchdowns) and three critical forced fumbles by the defense, the Jayton Jaybirds defeated Petersburg 74–34.
Sessums carried the ball 26 times and bruised the Buffalo defense at will. Sessums proved that his role as the lead back in Jayton is crucial when the Jaybird offense needs con sistent scoring. Sophomore Isaac King provided an offensive spark carrying the ball for 103 yards and rushing touchdown. Senior quarterback Joel Williams connected with Jaydon Rivera for a beautiful touchdown pass late in the second quarter. The offense amassed a total of 469 yards while scoring 55 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
On defense, Jayton allowed the Buffaloes to amass 358 offensive yards. While Petersburg was able to move the ball often, the defense stopped several drives, causing seven fumbles. Caleb Beck, Julian Segura, Rivera, and Jace Rivera have consistently provided the defensive line and secondary stability. Segura connected on six of his PAT attempts.
As the scoreboard indicated the end of the game, the Jaybirds celebrated the fact that their undefeated season remains intact. The past two weeks against formidable opponents in Valley and Petersburg have helped Jayton prepare for future battles with playoff implications.
This week, Jayton will host their homecoming game against the Roby Lions on Friday, October 1, at 7:30 pm. Jayton will look to continue their winning ways as many alumni and family members will travel to enjoy the weekend.
