There’s a bigger difference between the haves and the have-nots in the 15-1A basketball race for the boys than the girls. Whereas a variety of scenarios could affect the girls when three teams are tied for second, the boys’ race is much more defined.
Jayton, Paducah and Spur are clearly 1, 2 and 3 in the race, and two of the other three teams are 1-4 and one is 0-5.
But upsets can still occur, and the district title is still very much in play.
Leading the way is state championship runner-up from 2019, the Jayton Jaybirds, who are undefeated so far. Ironically, the district champion last year was Paducah, who defeated Jayton on their home court to win that title. This year, the Jaybirds made sure that the Dragons didn’t repeat history.
The top three teams in district so far all advanced in the playoffs last year as well.
The first half of the season for the boys is over, but there are five more games to play. Jayton, Paducah and Spur all play each other one more time, and anything could happen.
