Jayton was picked to win District 7-1A Division II, according to the 2019 edition of “Dave Campbell’s Texas Football,” which was published last week. Rounding out the 7-1A district predictions were Lueders-Avoca, Rule, Guthrie and Paint Creek in that order.
Jaybirds running back, senior Tye Scogin, was named the preseason offensive most valuable player while junior Pecos Smith, Jayton cornerback, was named the preseason defensive player of the year.
The 2018 Jaybirds were one game from playing for the state championship and advanced further than any Jayton football team since 2007. Coach Josh Stanaland has four starters returning on offense and five on defense, which bodes well for the six-man team.
The magazine predicted Ira would win the District 4-1A Division II title, while Spur would finish second.
Following Spur were Aspermont, Hermleigh and Rotan. Ira’s Anthony Coy was named the preseason defensive player of the year, while Aspermont’s Rowdy Bradley was named the preseason offensive player of the year.
Coach Tate Clark will have three starters returning on offense and five on defense.
Motley County was noted as the magazine’s choice to win District 2-1A with Silverton, Kress and Patton Springs to finish in that order.
Noseguard Derek Fisk of Motley County was picked as the preseason defensive player of the year, and running back Neil Garcia of Silverton was named as the preseason defensive player of the year.
The magazine pointed out that the Patton Springs Rangers had been able to field a team all season in 2019 and win some games; most of those players should be back; and the Rangers should be able to improve as long as they stay healthy.
