Due to a home scheduling conflict for opponent Wilson, the Jayton Jaybirds wound up hosting the Mustangs for their third straight game. In response, the Jayton junior class took the initiative and opened their concession stand with new and refreshing items for spectators. Unfortunately, the game would not turn out to be as satisfying for the Mustangs, as they fell to Jayton 58–0.
Carson Sessums, Isaac King, Jaydon Rivera and Julian Segura each scored rushing touchdowns to spread the wealth for the Jaybird offense. Joel Williams connected on both of his passing attempts for touchdowns to Rivera and Caleb Beck. Isaac King has continued to convert most of his PAT attempts. On defense, Jayton demolished Wilson, allowing minus 47 total yards and causing three fumbles. Wilson never found the opportunity to get their offense going against the Jaybird attack.
Jayton, now 3–0 on their season, will face the Valley Patriots on Friday, September 17, at Jaybird Stadium. Last year, fans missed the opportunity to watch brothers Josh and John Stanaland coach against one another due to issues with Covid-19. This year, both teams are undefeated and will look to stay that way in a tough matchup. The Patriots have returned several starters and are hungry to break out of one of the most challenging districts in division 1.
This Jayton squad has proved to be full of talent but has yet to face a team like Valley, which will match Jayton step for step. Therefore, an early non-district test will benefit Jayton as they work to find their full potential.
Jayton fans have been asking, “What is our football team capable of?” The final result might answer that question at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
On Thursday, September 16, Jayton Junior High will play an away game against Valley at 5 p.m. The junior high team defeated Wilson 45–0 and will hope to stay undefeated on their season.
