JGISD board accepts Sheets’ resignation, names Tubbs interim superintendent at May meeting

In the regular monthly meeting of the Jayton-Girard Independent School District on May 15, trustees unanimously voted to accept the reignation of Superintendent Layne Sheets, who has accepted a position in another district. The board also approved Johnny Tubb interim superintendent.

Sheets’ last day was to be May 31. Trustees also voted unanimously to work with Region 17 staff to assist in a superintendent search.

In other action trustees voted unanimously to certify the results the May 6, 2023, and new JGISD board member Matt Herzog was sworn in.

New board officers elected were L’Rae Lee, president; Cody Scott, vice-president; and Jeff Arnold, secretary.

The superintendent’s report, given by Johnny Tubb, included the End of Year Party on May 26, Big Event Lunch on May 24, tennis court fence damage and CMAR Meeting Scheduled for May 22.

The board unanimously approved the resolution to extend the depository contract through 2025, and unanimously approved the resolution as presented identifying the highest bidder for purchasing the district’s residential property as Nathan Brooks.

Trustees entered closed session at 8:35 p.m. and returned to regular session at 8:56 p.m. The board then unanimously approved the voluntary resignation agreement as presented.

The next board meeting date and time was set for June 19, 2023 at 7 p.m.

Members present were L’Rae Lee, Jeff Arnold, Amanda McGee, Steven Collins, Cody Scott, Matt Herzog and Andy Vargas.

School officials present were Johnny Tubb, interim superintendent; Nathan Branum, principal; Laci Scogin, business manager; and Keith Emfinger, network administrator.

Visitors present were Kelsi Stanaland, Wayne Blount and Syd Sexton with ESC 17.
