JGISD sets election on new tax rate for Nov. 8

At the regular monthly

meeting of the Jayton-Girard Independent School District in August, the board voted to designate authority to Superintendent Layne Sheets to calculate the tax rates in accordance with requirements in the tax code.

Trustees then adopted the school budget as presented, and approved the property tax rate of .97460, which is effectively a 24 percent increase.

The board then approved ordering a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election to Ratify an Adopted Tax Rate that exceeds the District’s Voter-Approved Tax Rate. This election is to be conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022.

In other board action, principal Nathan Branum gave his principal’s report, which included a first-day enrollment of 173, along with Open House, In-Service Activities, Back to School Assemblies, Football Scrimmages, Cross Country Practices and Upcoming Meet, Band Practice, School Pictures, Drills and Gridiron Classic.

Trustees approved the 2022-2023 Teacher Appraisal Calendar as presented.

The board approved the insurance proposal from Henderson Agency, Inc., as presented.

Trustees approved the appointment of the Kent County extension agent as adjunct faculty, aspresentedandapproved the Kent County Resolution for Sanctioned 4-H Activities as Jayton-Girard Extra-Curricular Activities as presented. Trustees approved the request for county permanent school funds in the amount of $4,465.86 for capital improvements.

The board approved the SLC Consortium Interlocal Agreement for July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024 as presented. Trustees approved the Student Attendance Manual as presented. In the superintendent’s peport, Superintendent Sheets updated the board on School Housing, the Accountability Rating Summary and Homecoming 2023. Members present were president B.J. Baldridge and members Steven Collins, Cody Scott, L’Rae Lee, Andy Vargas and Amanda McGee. Absent was Jeff Arnold. School officials present were Superintendent Layne Sheets, Principal Nathan Branum, and business manager Laci Scogin.
